| Gail Safian Senior Consultant What is your role at SENSEI? My whole career has been in healthcare public relations, so I can add insight and experience. Because I've worked in so many areas over the years, even if I don't know everything, I know the questions to ask and I know where to look to find the answers. Right now, I'm focusing on the oncology businesses at SENSEI. They are fascinating assignments and are of particular interest to me. How long have you been in healthcare communications? A long time... more than 20 years. I've been consulting since 1994, and before that I worked for several of the largest public relations firms in the world, including Burson-Marsteller and Ruder Finn. I also have an MBA, so I have a pretty good business sense. What do you like about consulting? I was the general manager and executive vice president of a small healthcare specialty agency before I went off on my own. I spent most of my time running the business and managing people, so I didn't have a lot of involvement in the content or the products, and didn't have much interaction with clients and I really missed that. Now I really do the things that I love. What is your expertise? Issues management. I've been involved with some products that have some really controversial issues. I enjoy it because I have to get into the science, and I often have to look at other factors like epidemiology and demographics to come up with informed ways of discussing the issue and presenting the company's side of it in a way that's not just PR, that's really founded in science and fact. Did you know you'd be doing this when you were young? No, absolutely not. I was a newspaper reporter, and one of the places I covered on my beat was the local hospital. The hospital director said, "If you ever want a job that pays better than journalism, think about hospital public relations." I said, "What's that?" It turned out that was my next job. What is your favorite thing about yourself? I like to share and to teach. My children find it extremely annoying, but if I gain some knowledge, I want to share it. I really want to engage other people and get them excited about it. What three things couldn't you live without? Mascara, something to read and my family. |
